Gallery Hanging Standards
This is to help emerging artists, artists looking to exhibit with us, and individuals submitting for upcoming exhibits with hanging standards.
Frames
-
Check with a professional framer for advice on how to frame your work to best advantage
-
Simple frames are currently most marketable
-
Be sure the colour of the frame best complements the artwork and mat - if in doubt, go with a simple Black or White
-
Be sure the artwork and mat fit snugly and squarely in the frame
Metal Frames
-
Should not be scratched or otherwise damaged
-
Corners should match up perfectly
Wood Frames
-
Should not be chipped, damaged or scratched
-
Artists are welcome to recycle frames, but they must be sell/display ready
Glass
-
Must be spotless on both sides, with no chips or scratches
-
Be aware that non-glare glass diminishes colour by as much as 20%
Mats
-
Must be spotless and perfectly cut
-
White mats tend to be the best for sales
Wires
-
Wires can be dangerous. Wrap the ends securely around the main hanging wire and cover the ends with tape.
-
Be sure the wire is taut enough so the frame hangs properly and the wire does not show above the frame.
-
Place the wire grips (rings) about 1/3 down from the top of the frame. (d hooks that mount flesh to the work, not hooks that stick out from the back - this causes the work to not hang flat on the walls.
