Objective: Spicing up the colors in Cast Shadows

This picture was taken on a warm very bright day. The cast shadows are very interesting and very strong.

Shadows will change throughout the day, some shadows are long and stretched, others are narrow and focused.

Intense shadows in a painting create depth and drama with a strong contrast.

Shadows are not just dark and gray, but are darker-value versions of the colors of the surfaces that you see.

For interest, try different colors for the shadows.

The cast shadows are dull, dark and cool. Have fun with the shadows using warm colors.

Paper:

I will be painting on a ½ sheet Arches 300lb CP

Bicycle Reference Photo: A reference photo will be emailed to the Station Arts Center. Please have your drawing prepared before the workshop – at least most of it.

The photo does not have the brick surface – either draw the brick surface or use your own idea for the background.

It looks really great on a half sheet size – 15” x 22”

Some color suggestions:

.Ultramarine Blue

.Yellow – Aureolin

.Permanent Alizarin Crimson

.Quinacridone Magenta
